Archilovers Best of 2024: Full Renovation in Sagasta I
The Full Renovation in Sagasta I, in a 1900 building in Madrid, is part of Archilovers' Best of 2024 selection.
Archilovers, the architecture platform of the Archiproducts group, publishes thousands of projects by practices from all over the world every year. At the end of 2024 it selected around a thousand, out of some twenty-five thousand published, for its Best of 2024 collection. Among them is ÁBATON’s Full Renovation in Sagasta I, which the editorial team had already marked as a featured project.
The home occupies a flat in a 1900 building on Calle Sagasta in Madrid, and the work was completed in 2018. The project rethought the layout without erasing the house that was there: an open hall now joins the living room and the kitchen, and a curved corridor gently separates the day and night areas.
What was kept matters as much as what was changed. The ceiling mouldings, the pitch pine floors, the hydraulic tiles and the old doors were restored and integrated into a bright interior, so that the home still speaks of the building it belongs to. Renovating, here, meant listening to the house before intervening in it.
The Archilovers selection is not an award with a jury, but an editorial distinction of the platform. It does, however, have the merit of singling out, among thousands of projects, a work that relies on craft and respect for what exists rather than on gesture.
