Global Architecture & Design Awards 2018: Third Award, Private Residence (Built), CH Project

The CH Project, a timber house among holm oaks in La Moraleja, won third prize at the 2018 GADA in the built private residence category.

The Global Architecture & Design Awards are an international competition with a jury, organised every year by the Rethinking The Future platform. In its 2018 edition, the built private residence category gave third prize to ÁBATON’s CH Project.

CH is a single-family house in La Moraleja, north of Madrid, of some 750 square metres. The project began with what was already on the plot: a group of holm oaks that the studio decided to keep and around which the plan was organised. The house opens towards them and towards a central courtyard that distributes light and circulation, so that the garden does not surround the home but enters it.

The structure is cross-laminated timber, with twelve-centimetre load-bearing walls that allow dry, precise construction and leave warm surfaces inside. Large expanses of glass blur the boundary between the living room and the outdoors; hence the name under which the studio presents it, a house without limits.

CH brings together several constants of ÁBATON’s work: timber as a structural material and not merely a finish, respect for the existing vegetation and an architecture that prefers calm to display. The 2018 recognition came in the same year that BATAVIA, the interior design shop linked to the studio, received an honourable mention in the same competition.
