Global Architecture & Design Awards 2018: Honourable Mention, Interior – Corporate (Built), BATAVIA
BATAVIA's shop in the former stables of the Palacio de Villagonzalo received an honourable mention for interiors at the 2018 GADA.
In their 2018 edition, the Global Architecture & Design Awards, the international competition organised by the Rethinking The Future platform, gave an honourable mention in the built corporate interiors category to BATAVIA’s shop in the Palacio de Villagonzalo in Madrid.
The premises occupy the palace’s former stables on Calle Mejía Lequerica, a mid-nineteenth-century building that from 1906 had housed an ironmonger’s. Over more than a century of use, the space had accumulated its own memory: mosaic floors, stone columns, wooden shelves that once held nails and tools.
ÁBATON’s intervention started from that memory. The mosaics, the columns and the old shelving were kept, and the steel surrounds added to the openings clearly mark what is new without erasing what is old. Across some 400 square metres, the result is a serene interior, which the project description calls a calm, modern space.
The opening coincided with the twentieth anniversary of BATAVIA, the interior design firm linked to the studio. In the same edition of the awards, the CH Project received third prize in private residence.
