Architizer A+Awards 2017: Jury Winner and Popular Winner, Apartment, Comprehensive Renovation in Alcalá
The Comprehensive Renovation in Alcalá won both the jury and the public award of Architizer's A+Awards in 2017, Apartment category.
Architizer’s A+Awards recognise two points of view in each category: that of an international jury and that of the public voting online. In 2017, in the Residential – Apartment category, both agreed on the Comprehensive Renovation in Alcalá, a project by ÁBATON designed together with Wespi de Meuron Romeo architects, with interior design by BATAVIA.
The home is a duplex on the sixth and seventh floors of a building on Calle de Alcalá in Madrid, completed in 2014: some 250 square metres of usable floor area and a 60-square-metre terrace. Each floor keeps its own character. On the lower floor the building’s classical features were retained, the mouldings and the proportions of the rooms; the attic, by contrast, was resolved with a pared-back, white architecture, open to the terrace and to the light of the city.
The project does not try to disguise that difference, but to make it liveable. The staircase and the circulation join two ways of understanding a home, tradition and the modern spirit, and let them coexist without either prevailing over the other.
According to the studio, that same year the renovation also appeared among Archilovers’ featured projects. Architizer’s double award, however, best sums up its reception: it was valued by the specialists and chosen by those who simply looked at it.
