Comprehensive Renovation in Alcalá
Renovation of a historic building in Madrid
The renovation in Madrid, carried out with the Swiss team Wespi de Meuron Romeo architects, transformed a 1900 building. The house, which had not been renovated since the 1940s, incorporated the roof and the old storage rooms. The project sought to unite two floors and create a bridge between tradition and modern style.
Preservation of the classic on the first floor
On the sixth floor, historic elements such as the plaster ceiling decorations and traditional windows were preserved. Although the wooden floor had to be replaced by a new oak floor, the renovation respected the original partitions, adapting them for new functionalities without losing the classic charm.
“The challenge was to preserve historical details, such as plaster moldings, while integrating them with new functions.”
“We used natural light and a white palette to visually connect the two styles of the renovation.”
Visual and luminous connection
To connect the two floors, the renovation included a minimalist design in the hall, hallway and master bedroom. A central skylight allows natural light to enter, creating a sense of continuity. The entire house was unified with a white color palette, which reinforces the link between classic and modern.
Attic modernization
The upper floor, a former unused attic, was converted into a modern living room with access to the roof terrace. This space, completely minimalist, stands out for its gable roof and large windows that flood the entire environment with natural light. The kitchen was placed in the center, under the highest point of the roof.
