Architizer A+Awards 2014: Popular Choice, Single Family Home XS, Portable Home ÁPH80
ÁPH80 won the public award of Architizer's A+Awards in 2014 for single-family homes of under ninety square metres.
The Single Family Home XS category of Architizer’s A+Awards is reserved for single-family homes of under a thousand square feet, some ninety square metres. In the 2014 edition, the public vote distinguished ÁBATON’s Portable Home ÁPH80, which at twenty-seven square metres occupied less than a third of that limit.
The house was, above all, a complete home. Under its pitched roof there was room for a living room with kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom for two people; the solid timber of the structure, machined in the workshop, was left exposed inside, and the glazed façade opened onto the landscape. It was made in a few weeks, transported by road and assembled in a day, with no building work on site.
What ÁPH80 proposed was a house reduced to the essentials that did not look temporary. The small scale made it possible to control every detail and every joint, and to keep the cost contained.
That year the house added another public award, in the Architecture +Living Small category, and a mention at the fourth Ibero-American Design Biennial in Madrid. The three distinctions agree on the same thing: a minimal home can also be a good house.
