Mention at the 4th Ibero-American Design Biennial BID14 (2014), industrial and product design: Portable Home ÁPH80

The Portable Home ÁPH80 received a mention in industrial and product design at BID14, the fourth Ibero-American Design Biennial.

The Ibero-American Design Biennial brings together in Madrid, every two years, the work of designers from Spain, Portugal and Latin America. It is organised by the DIMAD Foundation and its fourth edition, BID14, filled the Central de Diseño at Matadero between November 2014 and March 2015, with some four hundred works selected by teams from each country.

In the industrial and product design category, the biennial awarded a mention to ÁBATON’s Portable Home ÁPH80. The official catalogue lists it with the names of the team, headed by Camino Alonso and Ignacio Lechón.

That a house should compete as a piece of industrial design is no paradox. ÁPH80 was conceived as a finished object: twenty-seven square metres, nine by three, a pitched roof reaching three and a half metres of internal height, and inside three spaces, a living room with kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom. It was made in the workshop in a few weeks, from machined timber, travelled by road and was assembled in a day. The catalogue describes it as a modular construction that can be sited immediately.

The house summed up an idea that runs through the studio’s work: reducing what is necessary until the home is simple without ceasing to be warm, and able to rest in a cereal field without asking anything of the ground. That same year, the public of Architizer’s A+Awards chose it in two categories.
