Architizer A+Awards 2014: Popular Choice, Architecture +Living Small, Portable Home ÁPH80

The Portable Home ÁPH80 won the public award of Architizer's A+Awards in 2014 in the Architecture +Living Small category.

Architizer’s A+Awards give two prizes in each category: one decided by a jury of specialists and the other by public vote. In 2014 the public chose ÁBATON’s Portable Home ÁPH80 in the Architecture +Living Small category, devoted to proposals that rethink the home in a few square metres.

ÁPH80 fitted into twenty-seven square metres, nine by three, under a pitched roof that reached three and a half metres of internal height. The structure was solid timber, CNC-machined; it was made in the workshop in a few weeks, travelled by road and was assembled in a single day. Inside, a living room with kitchen, a bathroom and a bedroom for two people, and a large glazed façade that turned the landscape into the main room.

Living in a small space was not, for the studio, a form of renunciation. The house summed up the principles ÁBATON has defended since its foundation: wellbeing, balance with the environment and simplicity. Its size made it necessary to decide precisely what was essential, and it is that precision the public recognised.

In the same year, ÁPH80 also won the public award in the small single-family home category and a mention at the fourth Ibero-American Design Biennial. The house is no longer produced, but it remains a reference point in the studio’s trajectory.
