Sotto is an entrance garden, and entrance gardens have an obligation the others do not: they are crossed every day, going out and coming back, in a hurry and carrying bags. We started from there. The aim was not to make a place to linger but a route worth walking twice a day.

The layout is set by a few stone steps and a side path of slabs beside the white wall of the house. On both sides, the planting. Low hedges and a dark hedge at the back provide the structure that does not change; a few columnar thujas by the door supply the vertical. Everything else moves.

The palette is warmer than in our other gardens. Orange crocosmias catch fire in high summer above the pink echinaceas; euphorbias bring that lime green which lights up the shaded corners; and among them, purple salvias, nepeta, blue lobelias and red valerian over grasses that turn golden at the end of the season. Flowering follows on from spring to autumn so that the entrance is never bare.

The trees, of medium size, we chose to shade the path without darkening the door. It is a fine balance: too much shade and the entrance goes dim; none, and in July nobody stops.

The underlying idea is simple. An entrance garden is not decoration; it is the first and last landscape of the day for those who live in the house, and also the only part of the garden seen by everyone who passes in the street. Sotto resolves both with the same gesture: a dense, living, low-water planting that turns a few metres of path into something one wants to look at.
