In the county of Suffolk, England, a walled garden has been transformed into a contemporary oasis that respects and enhances its historic legacy. This landscaping project, designed by Colm Joseph, has been recognized with the People’s Choice Award at the Society of Garden Designers Awards 2025, noted for its innovative and context-sensitive approach.
The landscape design project in its historical context
Located on a historic site in East Suffolk, the walled garden presented the challenge of integrating modern elements without losing the essence of the site. Joseph approached this challenge by creating a design that flows through three interconnected areas, each with its own identity but cohesive as a whole. This strategy allowed for a smooth transition between the different spaces, offering a rich and varied experience to the visitor.
A sustainable garden
The design features naturalistic planting that contrasts with and, at the same time, complements the old Victorian walls surrounding the garden. The choice of plant species was meticulous, seeking not only aesthetics but also sustainability and adaptation to the local climate. This careful selection ensures that the garden evolves harmoniously over time, maintaining its beauty and functionality.
Integration of architecture
One of the highlights of the project is the integration of architectural elements with the natural environment. Existing structures, such as the brick walls, have been preserved and restored, serving as a backdrop for the new plantings. In addition, trails and rest areas have been incorporated to invite contemplation and enjoyment of the space, fostering an intimate connection between the visitor and the environment.
