Bradbury Works: conservation of architecture with added value.

Bradbury Works, an office building in Gillett Square, Dalston, reopens after renovation of the pre-existing 600 m2 of workspace and an additional 500 m2 extension by architectural firm [Y/N] Studio.

The building is one of the most unique public spaces in the capital, so the intervention focused on preserving the most relevant and significant attributes of the architecture, while offering new and flexible spaces adapted to business growth and diversity.

The new 10 m2 premises, located in front of the square, have a glass front that makes the commercial space more versatile: when opened, the premises are transformed into open-plan spaces with a direct connection to the outside. To ensure security and privacy, they are protected by profiled metal doors.

In a quest to reconcile modernity with the city’s history and tradition, the original masonry structure of the Victorian terrace has been preserved, restored and renovated, creating new workspaces. To connect the two levels, a covered outdoor terrace provides access to the upper area. The landscaping of this area, with picnic tables, evergreen ferns and climbing plants, provides an atmosphere that encourages tenants to gather throughout the year and interact with the plaza.

Another unique feature of the intervention lies in the design of the new signage. The existing staircase and entrance have been redesigned with CMYK printing colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black). With the claim to make the building a gathering point for culture and art, the choice of these colors defines its ambition and intention. In the rest of the building, the color palette becomes neutral and simple, offering tenants a blank canvas for customization.

The exterior facades are covered with polycarbonate, completed with a base and roof of profiled aluminum. The choice of these materials makes it possible to create a versatile and changing skin. In the distance, it reflects light and up close it allows the presence of white brick and the terrace to be seen. During daylight hours, this cladding reflects the colors of the sky, while at nightfall, it reveals the activities of the interior.

Bradbury Works’ intervention reflects an awareness of the capital’s architectural history and the needs of its tenants. A transformation that adds value without detracting from the original building, interpreting its legacy and its possibilities today.
